So I'm working on putting together a Pro's and Con's list of the grad schools I was accepted into so that it will be easier for me to make my decision. R1 will be the school I got into first and R2 will be the school I got into second. Here goes.
R1
Location: R1 is definitely the closer of the two schools and would be easier to get to, especially if I'm going to be taking night courses, which brings me to another point...
Online: Some of R1's courses can be taken online and they actually strongly recommend that you at least take one online course.
The Program: The program at R1 is Organizational Leadership with a track in Higher Education. This provides me with a broader range of opportunities than a Higher Education Administration program, but I'm not sure if broader is what I want. I want to find a good fit for myself and while looking through the courses I could really see myself loving the program. The courses all sounded interesting--and even fun! But then I started thinking, what if I'm not taken seriously?
The Time Commitment: This program suggests taking only 6 credits a semester, especially in the first semester. This means the time commitment is only two nights a week and there are also more options in classes that I could be taking.
Price: I was made aware today that R1 is not a state school and will probably cost more than R2 by a lot. This made me nervous at first but because it is a private school I feel like they may be able to offer more money, like when my parents compare my private, out of state undergraduate institution to my sisters state school undergraduate institution and see that I basically was helped out a lot more. But I'm not sure if it will be less expensive in the long run. I will have to research further on this point.
R2
Location: From what I said above, I'm sure you've figured out this school is farther away. It's in state, but I'm not sure how far. I believe over an hour, which is quite a drive to be making frequently.
The Program: The program at R2 is Higher Education Administration, which is originally exactly what I was looking for. It seems so much more serious and professional, maybe because it is the name of the program that the people I look up to who are in Student Affairs graduated with. I feel like this will take me exactly where I want to go and set up a focus for me in Student Affairs. It also seems like all that I have learned about grad school will be in this program and my expectations (although they make me worry) will be met in a higher ed admin program. Also, if I were to go for my doctorate (which I would love to be able to do) this would be my area of study so I feel like it might make more sense for me to have it as my masters as well.
Time Commitment: I emailed my adviser yesterday and was informed of his suggested courses. He suggested three courses for my first semester (9 credits), all night classes. That means three nights a week I would have to drive to and from campus.
Price: According to my mom, this is a state school so should cost less than the other school. That will be nice because I will have to save my money for gas anyway.
Well those are the main points in choosing my school I suppose. Maybe I should think more about what I want. I really do want to talk to someone so maybe I should email my old supervisor. I miss her anyway.
